Infiltration trenches are built to store storm water underground until it can slowly drain in to the soil around it. These trenches, also known as percolation trenches, are great for preventing this storm water runoff from moving further downhill and going into streams, lakes etc.
There are many different ways that infiltration trenches are designed. The most important of these design options are the physical size and location of these facilities. Infiltration trenches built to small will not be able to handle the amount of water during heavy storms and these facilities have to be built in areas that have permeable soils so water can drain away once filled.
The construction process of these trenches are fairly similar. A hole is dug in the proposed location and at the correct width, length and height. A layer of sand is spread at the bottom followed by the lion share of the hole filled with drainage stone. The sand and stone are separated from the surrounding dirt by a geotextile fabric to prevent this soil from plugging the voids in the rock.
Other design features such as an observation wells, back up berms, downspout extensions, overland relief etc are very commonly used in these trenches and vary from design to design.
